Former Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi described him as "a ruthless killer embedded in the state, protected by cowards."

National Commissioner Fannie Masemola called him "This man is responsible for death, destruction, and the collapse of policing in entire regions."

Meanwhile, former Minister Senzo Mchunu was described as "taking Matlala's calls — even while Matlala was in prison."

He offered no further comment.
